Abstract

Background: Traumatic dental injuries have a strong impact on children's and adolescent's life quality because they cause physical and emotional suffering, and in children, they might have a high negative impact on the social relationships. The aim of the study is to determine the prevalence of traumatic dental injuries to anterior teeth among children of age group 4-12 years old. Material and methods: The study was conducted among 40 children of age group 4-12 years old. Before commencement of the study, the informed consent was signed by the parents. Study sample was divided into three age groups as, Group I: 4 - 6 years; Group II: 7 – 9 years and Group III: 10 - 12 years. Ellis and Davey's (1960) classification was used for recording injuries. The examination was carried out by a single trained dental surgeon. Data was obtained concerning the prevalence of Traumatic dental injuries. Statistical analysis was done by using SPSS, version 22 (SPSS, Inc., Chicago, IL) and p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The traumatic injuries were more prevalent in boys. Class IX was prevalent in both group I and group II, Class I was more prevalent in group III. Conclusion: The prevalence of traumatic injuries can be reduced by taking into following measures: a. The use of intraoral and extraoral devices for the protection of the teeth and face from trauma. b. The knowledge of dentist should be improved in order to minimize the sequelae of traumatic dental injury. Education regarding the prevention and treatment should be given to children and their parents.
