Psychological Stress as a Contributing Factor for Apthous Stomatitis

Abstract


Background:  Oral ulceration is a common complaint of patients attending out-patient department. Aphthous stomatitis being the most common form of Oral Ulceration. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and correlate the levels of stress, serum cortisol and hemoglobin in apthous Stomatitis patients in Jaipur District of Rajasthan, India. Material and methods 60 patients comprising of 40 recurrent apthous stomatitis (RAS) patients and 20 control subjects were included in the study. Blood examination was done to evaluate serum cortisol and hemoglobin percent and Hospital Anxiety and depression (HADS) scale was used to evaluate stress.  Results showed that 70% RAU group had anxiety and depression with increase serum cortisol and reduced hemoglobin level as compared to control group.  Conclusion This study showed that among psychosomatic factor anxiety played a major role in both major and minor types of RAS. It also showed that RAS has slight predominance in males. Understanding the patient’s emotions and counseling the patients will be a major step towards the prevention of such psychosomatic disorders.
