Background: Dentistry is changing as we are now using modern science to practice dentistry. In comparison with classical medicine modalities such as antibiotics and disinfectants, ozone therapy is quite inexpensive, predictable and conservative. Since its introduction in 1840, ozone therapy is proving to be a new therapeutic modality with great benefits to the patients. Ozone therapy has become an adjuvant element in the control and treatment of infections in areas such as surgery, dermatology, cosmetics and in dentistry, as it has been studied for years in industry and medicine because it is an antimicrobial agent highly effective against various microorganisms. The potent antimicrobial power of ozone, along with its capacity to stimulate the circulatory system and modulate the immune response, makes it a therapeutic agent of choice in the treatment of medical pathologies and infectious oral diseases. In this review article, we will be looking at the mechanism of action of ozone, its generation using various devices and its applications in dentistry along with its toxicity.
Keywords: Ozone, periodontics, dentistry.
