Knowledge and Attitude of Students and Teachers who Smoke Towards the Electric Chanting Cigarette Lighter in Colleges of Pimpri-Chinchwad: A Questionnaire Study

Abstract


Aim:  India had a wave of mandatory pictorial warnings but it did not serve the desired purpose since they were not properly understood. Hence, there was a felt need for an effective strategy which could bring an implicit change in the attitude and practice of tobacco users. Electric chanting lighter is a lighter which chants a death phrase when users light up, to deter smokers from smoking, which is patented by Cancer Patient Aid Association (CPAA), Mumbai, India. However, the effectiveness of its use is unknown. Hence, to know the knowledge and attitude of college students and teaching staff (smokers) about the chanting lighter the study was conducted. Materials and Methods:  A total of 100 (25 teachers and 75 student) participants were part of the study, which was conducted from March – August 2014. Every participant was asked to listen to the lighter live and then immediately a self-administered questionnaire was provided to them which were answered. Results: Overall, 100% of the participants were unaware about the chanting lighter but 100% staff and 95% students were aware that smoking causes cancer. 100% staff and 89% students agreed that they won’t reuse and 80% staff and 70% students agreed that society will accept the chanting lighter. 80% staff and 66% students agreed that chanting lighter will be long lasting in giving up the habit. Conclusion:  Chanting lighter can be promoted as one of the first verbal warning aid for smoking cessation and it can bring about change in attitude of smokers.
