The implant abutment connection plays a pivotal role in the long-term success of dental implants, influencing both mechanical stability and peri-implant tissue health. Since the introduction of the original two-stage implant system by Brånemark in 1965, abutment connection designs have evolved significantly to address challenges such as micro-movement, bacterial infiltration, and prosthetic complications. This article provides an overview of the historical development, classifications, and biomechanical considerations of implant-abutment connections, including external hex, internal hex, and conical (Morse taper) interfaces. The review also discusses the implications of connection design on clinical outcomes. Understanding these connections is essential for optimizing implant longevity and ensuring successful prosthetic rehabilitation.
