Abstract

Background:  Efficacy of arthrocentesis with and without injection of sodium hyaluronate in treatment of internal derangements of temporomandibular joint. Materials and method: 20 patients with internal derangement were randomly selected and divided into 2 groups (10 in each group). GROUP A: Only arthrocentesis was performed. GROUP B: Arthrocentesis plus intraarticular injection of sodium hyaluronate was performed. The effect of treatment was assessed for 1week and three months by documenting pre-treatment and pos-treatment level of pain, mouth opening, lateral jaw movements and by noting presence or absence of clicking and deviation. Results: Both groups of patients were benefited from the treatment at the 3 month follow up and there was less intensity of pain and improvement in mouth in both group. Our study failed to show a statistically significant difference in post treatment outcome in clicking and deviation on mouth opening between arthrocentesis group and sodiumhyaluronate group. Conclusion: Both techniques increased maximum mouth opening, lateral movements, in reducing TMJ pain. But arthrocentesis with injection of sodium hyaluronate gave better results than arthrocentesis alone.
