Background: Endodontically treated teeth are known to present a higher risk of biomechanical failure compared to vital teeth. Posts are required for restoring such endodontically treated teeth to retain a core for definitive restoration. The prime objectives of post and core procedure are to build missing coronal structure as well as to provide sufficient retention and resistance form to final restoration. Material and method: After an informed consent obtained from the cases regarding the use of extracted teeth for the study a total of 60 human premolars were selected as sample in the present study. Teeth were stored in normal saline after clearing any blood, stain or calculus. the teeth were randomly divided into three groups of 20 samples in each group: 1) carbon post group, 2) glass fiber-reinforced post group, and 3) zirconia post group. after all preprations, a compressive load at 130° angle was applied to the long axis of tooth with 1 mm diameter using universal testing machine until visible or audible evidence of fracture was observed. The fracture force was measured in MPa. Results: Zirconia endodontic post presented with best results showing fracture resistance of 492.4 MPa. This was followed by glass fiber-reinforced post which showed a fracture resistance of 362.8 MPa and least resistance was seen for carbon post group which showed value of 246.6 MPa. Conclusion: Zirconia endodontic post presents with best results and highest fracture resistance in comparision to glass fiber and carbon posts. They can hence be used in endodontically-treated teeth to enhance their strength. Keywords: Carbon, zirconia, glass fibre, compressive force, fracture resistance.
