Background: CRP is a pentameric plasma protein with homologs in vertebrates and many invertebrates that participate in the systemic response to inflammation. The relation between vascular events and periodontal disease is further supported by evidence showing that oral bacteria can cause platelet aggregation and thromboembolic events by upregulating the expression of platelet aggregation-associated protein. Aim of the study: To assess levels of c reactive proteins in patients with generalised periodontitis. Materials and methods: The study was conducted in the Department of Periodontology of the Dental institution. For the study, we selected patients who were referred to the Department of Periodontology for specialized treatment. The inclusion criteria were lack of systemic disease, not taking antibiotics from past one month, no intraoral lesions, and not who have not undergone any periodontal procedure for 6 months. A total of 30 subjects with generalized periodontitis and 30 control healthy patients were selected. The subjects were categorized based on gingival index, clinical attachment loss indices into 3 equal groups of healthy, plaqueinduced gingivitis and chronic periodontitis. Results: A total of 25 patients were enrolled in each group, Periodontitis group and Control group. The mean age of patients in periodontitis group was 36.21 years and in control group was 37.54 years. Number of male subjects in periodontitis group was 14 and in control subjects was 12. Mean CRP level in periodontitis group was 3258.87 pg/mL and in control group was 5458.87 pg/mL. The results were compared and were found to be statistical non-significant. Conclusion: From the results of present study, we conclude that there is correlation between salivary CRP levels and severity of periodontal disease and the measurement of CRP level can be used for the diagnosis of periodontitis.
