Aim: To compare the efficacy of the pre-emptive administration of Piroxicam, Ibuprofen, Mefenamic acid and Placebo in reducing post-extraction pain in children. Materials and Method: 60 children aged 6-14 years, who needed primary tooth extraction were treated, with treatment preceded by local anaesthesia and analgesic drugs during the preoperative period. A Five Face Scale was used to evaluate pain reaction during injection, extraction and postoperative period. Results: Pre-emptive analgesics showed lower pain scores. Additionally, Piroxicam exhibited lower pain scores than Ibuprofen, Mefenamic Acid and Placebo at the 1 hour and 4 hours period. Conclusions: Preoperative use of Piroxicam, Ibuprofen and Mefenamic Acid may provide a pre-emptive analgesic effect after primary tooth extraction.
