Background: Although the evolution of three-dimensional imaging has represented a landmark in diagnostic imaging, its use in Dentistry turned out very discretely over the past few years. Three-dimensional imaging is rapidly replacing traditional radiographic methods. This new technology is particularly helpful with orthodontic concerns such as root length, bone structure, and root angulation. The use of 2D and 3D maxillofacial imaging to monitor the progress of orthodontic treatment is essential to effectively treat orthodontic patients. This review article discusses about the history and evolution of 2D and 3D diagnostic aids in orthodontics.
